In the afternoon, we stayed in our neighborhood to learn a little bit about the tumultuous history of Dublin’s Northside. We visited a recently renovated eighteenth century Georgian building turned urban tenement where the history of Dublin can literally be read on the scarred floorboards and pockmarked walls. We toured rooms that moved us from the swanky colonial wealth and pomp of the Georgian era to the bitter urban poverty of the nineteenth century, from the cusp of Irish independence to the bare knuckled flats of the post-war period. It was immersive, beautifully staged, and very moving!
